Soil Is Alive is a educational unit to showcase soils and the importance of being good stewards of the soil as it is the foundation of all life. We have curriculum and content directed toward all age groups from basics for early elementary to advanced content for university investigations.
We touch on many academic standards and can outline a program to meet other curriculum targets. Our message is one of scientific discovery, which focuses on:
Biology, the study of life, with specific focus on microbiology, botany, the study of plants, and the food web within the soil.
Geology, the study of earth and earth processes, focusing on pedology, the study of soil.
Conservation, the wise use of resources that promote the preservation, protection, or restoration of the natural environment and of wildlife .
Students will learn about beneficial organisms and pests, along with highlighting the soil as a habitat and the physical, chemical and biological processes that work together to promote activities above and below ground.
When you visit with the trailer, the hands on demonstrations and interactive resources allow for curiosity and wonder while learning the importance of soil and life in the soil. Educators will be provided with follow up lesson plans and activities that allow students to recall portions of the trailer as a foundation to a more in-depth lesson over soil, biology, or conservation topics.
